These students were reading about endangered animals during their guided reading group. This sparked a lot of conversation about why the different animals in the book were in danger.  We began looking online to find more answers.  From there, the groups chose one animal, the Komodo Dragon, that they wanted to focus on and learn more about.

First grade enjoyed watching chick eggs as they were in the incubator developing.  They monitored them and looked for changes.  As they began hatching, the students were amazed.  Here is a video of one chick hatching.

Skins Come To Willbern

First graders at Willbern were learning about animal habitats and animal body coverings during the second six weeks of Science.  All first grade classes attended an “Animal Coverings” presentation put on by two first grade parents, Mrs. VanFleet and Mr. Dubaniewicz.  The students were so excited because the presentation allowed them to have hands on experience and touch different types of body coverings.

Hands On!

Mrs. Short’s first graders love their learning stations.  TEKS are incorporated into these stations to provide hands - on practice and review.

Hum Bug Science?

Student in Ms. Erickson's class studied
bugs and even made their own!

Cracking Up?

Did you know?!?  It takes chick eggs 21 days to hatch! The first grade BIG EVENT in science is chick hatching.  We have one dozen chicken eggs that we are observing and caring for while they are in the incubator.  We are anxiously awaiting hatching day for our chick eggs.  They should start hatching around November 7th .  We have been good mama and papa hens to our growing chicks to be.  We’ve made sure the incubator has had enough water to keep the humidity up, the temperature is just right, and made sure the eggs are turned several times a day so a chick won’t be stuck in a shell.  What an exciting time!  I’m sure your child will let you know when our babies have hatched.

Math Fact Fun

Students in Ms. Erickson's class work on Fact Families. Students learn in many different
ways: including making posters and
playing sorting games

Hoop Science...

First grade students are diggin’ learning about different animal groups in science.  They have made play-do models of insects and spiders as they’ve learned their different characteristics.  They’ve observed them with hand lenses outside in their natural habitat and learned how their environment meets their needs to live and survive.  We are continuing our unit on animals by learning about the different animal group; mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, and amphibians and the characteristics of each.
