What is it?
Think of it as Creativity 101. Based on the concept of divergent thinking - understanding that there is more than one way to solve a problem - DI encourages kids to build on their strengths and to discover skills they never knew they possessed, be technical, theatrical, analytical, comic, linguistic, musical...the list goes on!
There are two components to the program:
1. Team Challenge
Written by expertsin DI's wacky brand of curriculum, Team Challenges purposely stimulate the different senses used to learn. Teams choose one Challenge (see attached) and spend an extended amount of time perfecting their solution. The full challenges are available upon registration.
2. Instant Challenge
Teams hone their problem-solving skills as they practice coming up with solutions for Instant Challenges. Being comfortable with quick decicion-making, and further developing teamwork are among the skills that Instant Challenges promote.
How does it work?
Teams meet weekly either at school or at the Team Manager's home. During these meetings, the teams work on their Team Challenges and practice Instant Challenges.
Teams access various resources in the community - the library, a construction site, a racetrack, a science lab or even an amusement park - wherever the teams might find information to help with one-of-a-kind solutions to the Challenge.
Teams present their solutions at regional and state tournaments. The program year concludes at an annual Global Finals, where top performing teams from all over the world gather to disply their creative problem-solving abilities.
DI is a Volunteer-led Program
The following positions are necessary in order for kids to participate. Please lend your support and volunteer as a Team Manager, Appraiser or help out at the Tournament if you can!
Team Manager: No experience necessary! The TM schedules meetings and ensures kids stay on track, gains them access to any community resources they need, facilitates Instant Challenges and provides adult supervision. The hardest part of a TM is to REFRAIN from providing ideas or help with the Solution. Only the Team may work on the Solution. Time commitment can vary.
Appraiser:
Every Team must provide two Appraisers. No experience necessary! Teachers, aunts, uncles neighbors, co-workers, and older siblings all make great appraisers. Training will be provided.
The program is open to ALL students! Want to learn more about Destination Imagination? Visit www.idodi.org and attend our informational meetings at Spillane below:
