Fourth Grade

In our studies of Native Americans, we learned that several Texas tribes had a shaman as an important figure in the tribe. He conducted religious ceremonies but was respected mainly for the magical powers he was believed to have. Among these powers was supposedly the power of healing the sick, which earned him the name "Medicine Man". The students were instructed to use any materials from home that they could find, and construct a shaman mask. This is a sampling of some of the masks from Mrs. Hussey, Mrs. Cohen, and Mrs. Sharp's classes.
