Second Grade

Second grade students have been developing skill in drawing and coloring in art.  They looked at many different pictures of rodeo and farm animals and chose one to draw.  They learned about drawing a close-up of the animal and added a background.  Students then colored their composition dark and neat with crayons.  They completed their artwork by crumpling up their paper and painting over it with black paint to give it an old look.

In music, second grade students have been learning to play music using the boom whackers.  Mrs. Holsome has taught them how to read rhythms. Taking it one step further, they turn the rhythms into music.

Second graders have been playing Clean Out the Backyard in PE.  In this game students have to keep balls off of their side of the room by throwing them to the other side.  Students are working on eye-hand coordination. They are also engaged in cardiovascular exercise.

*Children at early stages use their own invented spellings and receive valuable practice in translating from sound to print.  This practice and experience with letters and sounds form an excellent basis for reading.  In addition, the activity develops self-reliance in dealing with print, and contributes to a do-it-yourself attitude which carries over into learning to read.
