Science
  • The student will investigate the Earth's surface and its interior.
  • Students in Mrs. T. Smith's class used Science Discovery Works software to learn about fossils and how they are dated using the geologic time table. This student had to determine in which geological time period each of the organisms had lived and organize that information into a spreadsheet.

Math
  • The student will add, subtract, multiply, and divide to solve meaningful problems.
  • The student will use place value to read, write, compare, and order decimals.
  • Victoria, CFO of the bookstore, Book Scene at Biz Town, was busy working on printing the payroll checks for her employees. She had to determine how much to pay each employee and had to create a check for each employee. Click on the image to see Victoria using the computer as a tool for processing payroll.

Language Arts
  • The student will produce communications using technology or appropriate media such as developing a class newspaper and/or multimedia reports.
  • The 5th graders went to Biz Town and found out that they had to use technology as part of their job. Lorena was a reporter for the JA Biz Town Newspaper. Part of a reporter's job was to get advertisements for the newspaper so that the newspaper can make money. See the ad that she wrote for Khalil's music business using MS Word software.

Social Studies
  • The student will describe important due process right.
  • The student will create written and visual material such as reports.
  • The student will incorporate main and supporting ideas in verbal and written communication.
  • The student will organize and interpret information in reports, including charts.
  • The 5th graders went to Biz Town and found out that they had to use technology as part of their job. Joshua, the editor for the Biz Town newspaper used MS Word to write his article. Joshua reported the happenings at the Biz Town Courthouse where several citizens violated Biz Town law and had to pay fines. Please note that the violators names were blocked out to ensure privacy.
