Math |
||||
| The first six weeks, our second grade students were using the Smart Board as part of the learning tools for Mathematics. After using manipulatives for a while, students moved to the pictorial and then abstract part of doing two digit math problems. Here, you can see them working, using a variety of resources. | ||||

| By moving pictures of tens and ones around, students later create their own picture of the numbers represented with the images. | More second graders using technology to learn mathematics. | |||

Science |
||||
| One of the topics where technology was integrated in Science was "living and non-living things". Students created a power point slide with some characteristics of living and non-living things. Students typed a few paragraphs and inserted some pictures. This power point is a compilation of a few selected pages from second grade bilingual students. Students were encouraged to use the spell-check feature of the software, and to ask the teacher for clarification of the spelling in those cases when there was not a suggested word. We should point out that students who are learning English as a second language are at different stages in their writing, so some of the words you will see might not look like what you expect. Therefore, we have placed a disclaimer in the first slide. Click here to see the presentation. | ||||

Language Arts |
||||
| Second grade students use the computer lab to practice typing. There are a variety of software resources to reach the goal of knowing where the keys are, and the overall purpose is that students become familiar with a keyboard, reaching a "smooth and ryhtmic" typing style. | ||||

Social Studies |
||||
| One of the topics students were learning about was communities, and the differences between country, state, city, suburb and neighborhood. Students had a hands-on approach to better grasp the concepts. English language learners need to use a variety of resources when it comes to learning, and children who are ELL benefit more by using strategies as these. Click here to see another example of communities created by second graders, where they describe rules. | ||||
| Students created little paper houses and arranged them into a community. | By building with construction paper some nesting boxes, students could see in a more concrete way the idea of country, state, city, etc. | |||
