Attendance Office
The attendance office is open from 7:00 until 3:30 each school day. Please call the attendance office prior to 9:00 a.m. each day your student will be absent or late to school at one of the numbers listed above. If your student is absent and the attendance office has not been notified, they will
contact the parent/guardian at home or work to verify the absence. Please send a note with your student when he/she returns to school after any absence or when late. The note should contain the following information:
1. Student’s first and last name
2. Student’s grade level
3. Date(s) of absence or tardy
4. Reason for absence or tardy
5. Parent or Guardian signature
Students are required to bring a note for each absence within three days from the date of the absence. If the student does not bring a note for being absent, the absence will be counted as unexcused.

When leaving school before 3:10 P.M.
If a parent or guardian requests that a student leave before the end of the school day,
he/she must send a note stating:
1. The reason for leaving school
2. Time student needs to check out
3. Telephone number where the note may be verified.

When the student returns to school, he/she must bring a note from the parent/guardian or the doctor/dentist, if applicable.

What are excused absences?
1. Personal illness
2. Medical appointment (Doctor’s note needed upon return to school)
3. Illness or death in the family
4. Quarantine
5. Severe weather or dangerous conditions
6. Religious holy days (Prior approval needed from the principal)
7. Unusual causes (Principal’s approval)

Tardies

The Attendance Secretary is Nancy Vick and her phone number is -713 896-3443-.
When arriving to school after 7:30 A.M.
Students entering the building from 7:30 a.m. – 7:45 a.m. will be recorded as tardy to school. These students need to sign in at the attendance office upon arrival to school. Each
student who accumulates 3 tardies will be counted as an unexucused absense for the class for which the student was tardy. Students entering the building after 7:45 a.m. will be recorded as absent for that period.
Students are expected to be in class and ready for learning before the tardy bell rings. JVHS' bell schedule allows all students seven minutes to move from one class to
another. During that passing period, a two minute warning bell sounds.
Students tardy to class or school will receive a tardy detention for the class period in which they are tardy. Every student who enters class after the class begins disrupts the learning process for everyone who arrived on time. We all must work to keep interruptions to a minimum.

When students miss part of a school day
Please be aware that in secondary schools, attendance is taken in every period. It is very important that students are in school all day; however, sometimes it is necessary for a student to miss part of a school day. When this happens, the student will be marked absent for the class period/periods missed. If a student misses more than the amount of state-mandated days in a particular class, he/she can lose credit for the periods missed. Students may be allowed to make up the time missed by staying after school or on Saturdays for detention.
