Science

In science, 4th grade students are studying living things. Part of this is exploring how animals are classified. Using the SmartBoard and projector, the students utilized the Science Discovery Works software to learn about the characteristics scientists use to classify vertebrates. Click here to see how Mrs. Morrison and Mrs. Cutshall's classes created a spreadsheet to show these characteristics.

Cole matches up the animal classification to the correct animal.

Jeffrey, Emily, Da-Jia and Kegan use laptops in the classroom to research characteristics of the planet Mercury and compare those characteristics to those on Earth. They then reported their findings to the class and expressed their opinion on whether humans could ever inhabit this planet and what adaptations they would need to do so.

Math

Students in Mrs. Morrison's class work in small groups to solve subtraction word problem. They were able to work on butcher paper to give them ample room to practice using their 4-step problem solving stragegies.

The SmartBoard is also used in math to help the students understand rounding concepts. Diamond uses the stylus tool to plot her number on the number line. She can then "see" what end number it is closest to.

Social Studies
Emma combined her writing and social studies skills to create a postcard to demonstrate understanding of Texas Regions. The postcard had to include information that was related to a specific region of Texas. Doesn't it make you want to go and visit the high plains region of Texas?

Language Arts
Balanced Literacy is an important aspect of the Language Arts curriculum at Fiest. Reading and Writing are two components of this program. Students in Mrs. McClintic's classes were able to put this philosophy into action. After reading 3/4 of The Widow's Broom, by Chris Van Allsburg, they created their own endings to the story. They were then able to compare their ending to the one that Allsburg originally wrote in the book. Click on Trystan's name to read his alternate ending.

Large Group
