LA CATRINA

The featured event this semester is a video program called “La Catrina.” “La Catrina” is a delightful and engaging story about two high school students from Los Angeles who, upon graduation from high school, take a summer study-tour to the city of Querétaro in México. (The name of the state is also Querétaro). One of the students, Jamie Gonzalez, was born in LA but has roots in Querétaro. Her father and his family were from Querétaro. Jamie’s great-grandmother was rich and famous but she mysteriously disappeared during the Mexican Revolution that began in 1910.

“La Catrina” is a great way to build vocabulary, learn Mexican customs, traditions, geography and history and to apply Spanish grammar.

Each of the 14 episodes, all about 15 minutes long, will be viewed 2-3 times by each Spanish II class. The first viewing is just to grasp an overall understanding of the vocabulary used and changes to the story line; the 2nd viewing is to “drill down” to specific vocabulary, expressions and details of the story; the goal of the 3rd viewing (when time allows) is virtually 100% comprehension of the Spanish used.

So...put your attitude on right and come along and enjoy LA CATRINA!

¡Miren, escuchen y aprendan!

  MAKING THE GRADE

You may check this website from time to time for updates that will help you in this class.

Want to make good grades in Spanish II? Then come to class everyday, come prepared to work (books, paper, pens, Spanish notebook and other materials such as teacher handouts), take advantage of the time we have in class to participate and learn. Listen, follow instructions, be responsible and W-O-R-K to make it happen. Follow this formula and see what happens!

This is the way to make your "A" in this class:

Major Tests: 50%
Quizzes: 25%
Daily/Homework/Participation: 25%

  La Esquina

We learn grammar so that we may correctly write and speak in the target language, in our case Spanish.

We have to learn verb conjugations including irregular verbs. We have to learn how Spanish uses verbs such as "gustar." Then there are verbs that have "stem" changes before adding the appropriate verb endings.

Then there are adjectives which change forms to agree with their nouns.

So much to learn and so little time! That is why it is so important to come to class every day prepared to go to work. Learn a little bit today, retain it and learn a little bit more tomorrow. And, when the semester is over you will be pleasantly surprised at how much you will have learned. "Poco a poco se va lejos" nos dice el refrán (proverbio) en español. ("Little by little one goes far" according to a Spanish proverb).

  Refranes y dichos en Espaņol

These are the proverbs you will learn during the first semester:

(1) Una persona que habla dos lenguas vale dos personas. (A person who speaks two languages is worth two people).
(2) Un pájaro en mano vale cien volando. (A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush).
(3) En boca cerrada no entran moscas. (Flies cannot enter a closed mouth. In other words, silence is golden).
(4) Joven eres y viejo serás. (Young today, old tomorrow).
(5) Poco a poco se va lejos. (Little by little one goes far).
(6) Todo que brilla no es oro. (All that glitters is not gold).
(7) Querer es poder. (To want to is the power to).
(8) Más vale tarde que nunca. (Better late than never).
