Presidential Speech on Education to Students
Several parents have questioned how we will be handling the upcoming Presidential Address on Tuesday, September 8, 2009. While we will not be broadcasting the speech live due to logistical reasons and lunches, students will view the President’s speech the following day, Wednesday, September 9, through all social studies classes.
There will be follow-up activities using materials and suggested topics developed by the school district. These activities will help emphasize the key points in the lesson about the importance of education. District social studies coordinators have posted these resources on www.cfisd.net for your viewing.
The speech will be 18-20 minutes in length according to U.S. Department of Education. If a parent wishes for their student to opt out of this viewing, they may provide their student's social studies teacher a note, and the student will be placed in a supervised study hall during the viewing and follow-up activity.
For those that are interested, President Obama’s speech can be viewed via the internet at the White House website www.whitehouse.gov and on a rebroadcast on CFISD Channel 38.

Cypress Creek high school ranked among the top 1,500 U.S. high schools in the United States.
For the second consecutive school year, Cypress Creek ranked among the top 1,500 U.S. high schools in the country, according to the Washington Post and Newsweek’s annual Challenge Index.
The Challenge Index is determined by dividing the number of Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2008 divided by the number of graduating seniors. All of the schools on the list have an index of at least 1.000, meaning they are in the top 6 percent of public schools measured this way.

Key Communicator Letter to the Cy-Creek Community for May 3, 2009.
To all Cy Creek parents and community members,
We are up and running again after a four day lay off due to the unfortunate damage caused to Cypress Creek High School's electrical service as a result of last week's storm. All classes will resume on Monday, May 4 , and we will take up where we left off with plans to begin our TAKS testing on Tuesday, May 5. TAKs exams will run concurrently with Advanced Placement Exams during the week. Any student who misses an AP test due to TAKS testing will be allowed to test on an alternate day later in May.The AP make up schedule will be posted on our school site.
I want to thank parents, students, and Cy-Creek staff for their positive attitude during this unavoidable situation. I also want to assure parents and students that the Cy-Creek staff will work hard to minimize the impact of these missed instructional days. The teachers and other staff will be flexible and will keep student needs first and foremost in our minds.
We also want to thank all of those who worked around the clock these past several days to ensure that the campus could safely open on Monday. It was a tremendous team effort by CenterPoint, our general contractor and subcontractors, district staff members from Maintenance, Operations, Technology, Facilities, Food Service, as well as our Cypress Creek staff members. I am including a prepared attachment to answer any questions that you might have due to the cause of the outage, the measures taken to fix it and any other issues that may have arisen as a result of the situation. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have additional questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Jim Wells

Cy-Creek Key Club Goes to Austin to Promote "Lilly's Law"

Pictured Above: T.J. Sarkar, 17, president of the Cypress Creek High School Key Club, presents a petition to state Sen. Rodney Ellis, D-Houston, to support stricter laws against drunken driving.
Following the death of a middle school girl in December, students from Cy-Creek High School presented a petition at the Capitol to strengthen drunken-driving laws.
Ten students holding leadership positions in Cypress Creek High School’s Key Club brought their petition to lawmakers to propose Lilly’s Law, which was named after Lilly Lalime, a 13-year-old Houston girl who was hit and killed while getting off her school bus.
Lilly’s Law would require drunken drivers who cause traffic fatalities to be charged with murder and, if found guilty, given a minimum 15-year sentence.
Jim Wells, principal of Cypress Creek High School, said the trip to Austin allowed the students to experience the political process firsthand.
Fox News in Austin also ran a special on the Cy-Creek Key Club and Lilly's Law.
