Campus Goals

Copeland's mission is to cultivate lifelong learners one individual at a time. In support of this mission we promote academic excellence in an environment that embraces individual differences. We challenge our students daily and stress the importance of individual responsibility and perserverance. We believe that the education of children is a partnership between home and school. Parent involvement is crucial to the academic and social development of students. We encourage our parents to participate in the educational process. Copeland expects every child to have a successful educational experience. This goal becomes reality when families and schools work together with respect and trust in the pursuit of educational excellence for children.

Curriculum - Elementary

  • CFISD elementary schools are comprised of students in grades K-5. Students who qualify for the Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities or for Pre-kindergarten are bused to sites that provide these programs.
  • Core subjects at the elementary level include reading, language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, technology applications, health, physical education, art, music, and theatre arts.
  • Every campus faculty includes the following members: counselor(s), nurse, diagnostician, speech and language clinician, dyslexia specialists, reading specialist(s), and content-area liaisons, as well as specially trained/certified teachers in the following areas: art, music, physical education, technology applications, English as a Second Language, and gifted education.
  • A certified library media specialist directs the Learning Resource Center, which houses supplemental multimedia materials and a wide variety of recreational and informational reading selections.
  • The District's HORIZONS program is for academically-gifted students. In kindergarten, gifted instruction is provided in language arts and mathematics. In grades 1-5, the program addresses the four foundation areas: language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
  • CFISD's Bilingual and ESL programs provide additional support in English language development for students who have a home language other than English and who have been identified as limited-English-proficient.
  • Elementary schools in Cypress-Fairbanks also feature enrichment activities such as student clubs, tutorial sessions, cultural arts programs, academic competitions, and field trips.
  • Report cards are issued every nine weeks. Academic progress reports are sent to parents after the fourth week of each grading period.

How We Got Our Name

The Cypress-Fairbanks Board of Trustees has a proud tradition of naming schools in honor of individuals who have contributed significantly to the school district and its students.  Mr. William C. Copeland was this kind of employee.  He spent nearly three decades of service as the Tax Assessor and Collector.

Mr. Copeland began his career with the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District in 1963, and continued to serve with distinction as the area grew from a small farm community to being the second largest district in Harris County.  A native of the Spring Branch area of Houston, he was named Tax Assessor of the Year for the State of Texas in 1974, and was active in several professional associations.

Mr. Copeland retired in the spring of 1992, and his years of service were honored later that fall by the opening of William C. Copeland Elementary.  Mr. Copeland enjoyed visiting with students at Copeland and always attended special events at the school until his “homecoming” in the fall of 2008.

PTO

The Copeland PTO meets on a regular basis. The organization funds cultural arts activities and field trips, organizes volunteers, sponsors various student events, and conducts fundraisers which have provided, among other things, new technology equipment, landscaping, books, and playground equipment.
